Coriolis vs Electromagnetic Flowmeter: Promass F 100 vs Promag P 100

Coriolis vs Electromagnetic Flowmeter: Promass F 100 vs Promag P 100

Coriolis vs Electromagnetic Flowmeter: Promass F 100 vs Promag P 100

Two of the most common flow technologies in process plants are the Coriolis mass flowmeter and the electromagnetic (mag) flowmeter. They solve different problems: Coriolis measures mass directly and works with gases, while electromagnetic measures volume and only works with conductive liquids. This guide compares the Endress+Hauser Promass F 100 and Promag P 100 to help you choose.

At a Glance: The Short Answer

Choose the Coriolis (Promass F 100) when you need mass flow, high accuracy (±0.10%) or gas/liquid/slurry measurement. Choose the electromagnetic (Promag P 100) when you measure conductive liquids (water, acids, slurries) and want a lower-cost, no-pressure-drop meter with ±0.5% accuracy.

When to Choose the Coriolis (Promass F 100)

The Promass F 100 Coriolis Flowmeter is a high-accuracy mass flowmeter (±0.10% mass flow accuracy, integrated HART) that measures liquids and gases directly by mass. Choose it when:

  • You need mass flow (kg/h or t/h) rather than volume — essential for batching, custody transfer and dosing.
  • You measure gases, which electromagnetic meters cannot handle.
  • You also need density and temperature as process diagnostics.
  • The fluid value or accuracy requirement justifies the higher price.

When to Choose the Electromagnetic (Promag P 100)

The Promag P 100 Electromagnetic Flowmeter is a compact, full-bore meter (±0.5% accuracy, PTFE liner) for conductive liquids. Choose it when:

  • Your fluid is conductive (water, acids, alkalis, slurries) — the only hard requirement.
  • You want zero pressure drop across the meter.
  • Budget favours a lower-cost volumetric meter.

Decision Guide

  1. Need mass flow or gas measurement? → Coriolis (Promass F 100).
  2. High-accuracy custody transfer / batching? → Coriolis (Promass F 100).
  3. Conductive liquid, budget-sensitive? → Electromagnetic (Promag P 100).
  4. Water / wastewater / slurry? → Electromagnetic (Promag P 100).
