Bently Nevada 3500/42M vs 1900/65A: Which Vibration Monitor Fits Your Machine?

At a Glance. Both the Bently Nevada 3500/42M and the 1900/65A read the same industry-standard 3300 XL proximity probes, but they protect different classes of machines. The 3500/42M is a rack-based, SIL 2/3-capable monitor built to API 670 for critical turbomachinery — steam and gas turbines, compressors, expanders — where an automated trip is mandatory. The 1900/65A is a standalone 6-channel general-purpose monitor for pumps, fans, motors and small turbines where protection is achieved with alarms and Modbus/Ethernet reporting to the plant DCS instead of hardwired trips. Choose by machine criticality first, channel count second.

1. Two Architectures: Rack vs Standalone

The 3500 is not a single instrument but a modular rack system. A typical protection rack combines:

  • 3500/15 power supply (85-264 VAC / 88-140 VDC, 75 W, dual-redundant capable);
  • one or more 3500/42M monitors — 4 channels each for radial vibration, axial position or differential expansion;
  • a 3500/25 Enhanced Keyphasor module (1 pulse-per-revolution phase reference, 1-20,000 RPM);
  • a 3500/22M Transient Data Interface that buffers waveform data and serves Modbus TCP/RTU and Ethernet to System 1 condition-monitoring software.

The 1900/65A inverts this philosophy: one compact 24 VDC panel instrument with 6 channels, 4-20 mA outputs, Modbus RTU and Ethernet in a single enclosure. There is no rack to configure — which is exactly why it dominates small machine panels and OEM packages.

3. Sensor Selection: 3300 XL 8 mm vs 5 mm

Both monitors rely on the same probe family, so the sensor choice is independent of the monitor choice. The 3300 XL 8 mm is the industry default for radial vibration and axial position: 0.5 to 4.0 mm linear range, 7.87 V/mm (200 mV/mil) sensitivity, −55 °C to +177 °C probe tip rating and 1-9 m cable options. The 3300 XL 5 mm keeps the same electrical interface but shrinks to a 0.25-1.5 mm linear range for tight installation spaces and small shafts. For commissioning and routine proof tests, a TK-3E compact probe (3 mm tip, 10 Hz-10 kHz, 4 V/mm) is the usual field companion for case-monitoring points.

4. Selection by Machine Criticality

  1. Is the machine covered by an API 670 specification, or does a trip (SIL) function protect it? If yes, the 3500 rack with 3500/42M is effectively mandatory — no standalone monitor substitutes for SIL-rated voting logic and redundant power.
  2. Do you need transient/waveform capture for machinery diagnostics? The 3500/22M buffers 32 MB static and 4 MB transient data for System 1 analysis; the 1900/65A reports values but is not a diagnostic recorder.
  3. Are the machines numerous but individually non-critical? A wall of pumps and fans is the textbook 1900/65A case: six channels per unit, 4-20 mA to the DCS, Modbus rollup to the plant historian, minimal panel space.
  4. Hybrid plants: many sites run both — a 3500 rack on the main compressor train and 1900/65A monitors on balance-of-plant machines, all feeding the same DCS via Modbus.

5. Replacement and Migration Notes

Two replacement scenarios dominate procurement requests:

  • Legacy 3300 series monitors: sites still running original 3300/3300 XL panels typically migrate to the 3500 rack. Because 3300 XL probes are electrically compatible, existing probe/cabling usually survives the upgrade — only the monitor and power supply change.
  • Failed 1900 or 3500 modules: both lines are field-replaceable; the 3500/42M hot-swaps without disturbing adjacent modules, and rack reconfiguration is handled from the 3500 Configuration Software.

Send Glorient the module model and firmware requirements from your rack drawing and we will match the exact variant — including power supply and Keyphasor pairing — from stock.

6. FAQ

Can a 1900/65A protect a critical turbine instead of a 3500 rack?

No — not if the protection function is safety-instrumented. The 3500/42M is SIL 2/3 capable with voting and redundant supplies; the 1900/65A is an alarm-and-report device. For API 670 machinery the rack architecture is part of the specification.

Do the 3500/42M and 1900/65A use the same probes?

Yes. Both read 3300 XL 5 mm and 8 mm proximity probe systems (the 42M additionally supports 11 mm), so probe inventory is shared across the plant.

How many 3500/42M modules fit in one rack?

A full-size 3500 rack accepts up to 14 module positions alongside power supplies and the TDI, so channel counts scale far beyond the 4 channels of a single module.
